Great work on our outdoor projects! We hired him to handle several projects around our property and are very pleased with the results. He painted our outdoor shed, put down a brand-new floor inside the little house, and built and stained a new set of deck stairs for us. He was pleasant to work with throughout the process. I hired Mike General Contractor through Thumbtack to repair superficial puppy scratches on a kitchen wood floor before moving out of a rental property. Instead of a localized repair, he sanded a much larger section of the floor than authorized and left heavy sanding dust throughout the home, including countertops, vents, appliances, stairs, dining room, and living room areas. There was never any written contract, formal estimate, invoice, receipt, or detailed scope of work provided. Mike was also unwilling to clearly explain the products and methods he was using. When I asked what “oil-based foundation” or finish had been applied to the floor, he would not provide the product name or brand information. Throughout the project, communication was vague and inconsistent, and he did not properly explain the work being performed. During the project, he attempted to increase the agreed price after work had already begun. He represented himself as insured on his business card, but later admitted he did not actually carry insurance. The finished floor appeared blotchy, unevenly sanded, improperly sealed, and contaminated with visible debris trapped beneath the finish. The floor also remained tacky and inconsistent in appearance. Mike repeatedly assured me he would return to correct the issues and apply additional coats, but he ultimately failed to do so. After I raised concerns through Thumbtack, Mike became defensive about the complaint rather than addressing the condition of the floor. He later denied responsibility and claimed the floor “did not look like that” when he left, despite the condition being documented in photographs and messages. He also pressured me to sign a statement saying the work was complete even though the work remained unfinished and unsatisfactory, and he now relies on that statement to avoid responsibility. Since then, multiple flooring professionals have advised me that the damage may be severe enough to require full replacement of the kitchen flooring due to excessive sanding and improper finishing methods. I would strongly caution anyone considering hiring this contractor to insist on a written contract, proof of active insurance, detailed product information, and a clearly defined scope of work before allowing any work to begin. I am also extremely disappointed in Thumbtack’s response given their representations that they stand behind their professionals and guarantee the work performed through their platform. In this situation, the homeowner and tenant have been left dealing with substantial property damage and repair costs with little meaningful assistance.
