We had a tricky plumbing situation that required some additional branches created in a confined space to get a water softener fitted. Jeremy and his duo from Smitty’s got it done within the day, and we had soft water! Throughout quotation and setting up appointment, Jeremy was very responsive on Thumbtack chat, and had a very professional attitude. He also beat all competitor quote estimates and we were very happy with the level of quality and service.

Jeremy was extremely careful and thoughtful with installing our new water softener system. It was a tight space to begin with, however his installation was seamless. He is extremely personable, hardworking and truly passionate about the work he does. He is very knowledgeable, spent a couple of hours installing the system and even educated us on what to do if x-y-z happens. Overall a great experience. His reviews truly speak for themselves. 10/10 would highly recommend. Thanks again, Jeremy. -Cathy

Jeremy came out and installed a water softener I had purchased. The home previously had a softener (before we moved in) but he thoroughly checked all the pipes and connections to make sure they were to code and up to the task. After he very cleanly and professionally installed everything, he walked me through how to use it and answered all my questions. He’s very knowledgeable, I recommend him and would use his services again.

Install high efficiency water softener system for a great value and a timely manner. He even helped us understand our water filter system which he didn’t install. Definitely recommend Jeremy.

If you are wanting a water softener then look no further than Smitty's. I had three different Indianapolis based Plumbing companies come out and provide estimates on installing a water softener I purchased from Menards and Smitty's beat each of those companies by 50-60% for the same exact job. (Material and labor). Value wise I don't think you can go wrong with these guys. FAIR is all I can say. Now let's discuss my particular job and give all the details. I did not have a previous water softener so this was a new installation. I personally dealt with Jeremy throughout the process. Regardless if you need a softener replaced, you have bought one and need it as a new install, or you are looking for them to provide the softener and installation they can work with you and the pricing is fair really no matter the option you choose. The first piece of advice I would give is to test your water and find out it's hardness level. Smitty's may offer this but I used the Hach 5b kit from Amazon. Runs about $30 on sale usually around $45reg price as of 11-2-21. Easy to do and instructions are step by step. You will know your hardness level before and after the water softener is installed. https://www.amazon.com/Hach-145300-Total-Hardness-Model/dp/B09F9RS42Q For myself I live in SE Indy and ended up with water at 18gpg.(considered hard). Grains per gallon. You can convert this into parts per million by multiplying by 17.1. 18x17.1=307.8ppm of water hardness. Now figure up your home usage by looking at a utility report/bill etc. I found I was using on average 8ccf per month of water usage but decided to base my calculation off my peak water month usages of 9ccf. A CCF roughly equals 748gallons. So 9x748=6,732 gallons per month. Divide this monthly total by days in a month. I did 6,732 divided by 30=224.4gallon per day usage. Now we need to find the grains that are needed to size the softener. We take our daily usage in my case 224.4gallons and multiply that by my water hardness in gpg(18 for me). 224.4x18=4,039.2grains per day. You want the softener to recharge or flush itself roughly once a week. So you take your daily grains and multiply by the days in a week. My example 4,039.2 grains daily x 7 days in week =28,274.4grains. This is the figure that would size the grain capacity you need based on your water usage and hardness level. So you would need to purchase roughly a 30,000 grain capacity water softener. I personally chose a Morton water softener Model sold at Menards. It was on sale and had an 11% rebate. The unit regenerates once a week and takes about 120min or two hours and the program is set to regenerate at 2:00am when their is little to no water usage. Prior to the installation my water hardness was 18gpg or 307.8ppm and after the softener installation our water hardness is between 0 and 1gpg and or between 0 and 17.1ppm. I do not have a test kit that gets more accurate than that but I am more than pleased with the result of adding a water softener. That's a 95+% reduction in my hardness levels. Now we move into the actual installation. I have a 3/4" copper water feed line into the house. Smittys was doing the job in pex b and that is what they said is the standard usual install of 3/4" pex b. With this pex b I was aware of the reduction or flow restriction caused by the fittings. I expressed my concern and was told I could go with 1" pex b for an additional cost however it was more expensive and would not make that much difference. After the install I have noticed a significant decrease in my water volume. Prior to the water softener I had no issues running two showers. Post install I can no longer run two showers at the same time. We do not have enough water pressure/volume any longer. The water barely comes out when split between the two or one surges for water. Pushing water out and losing water pressure. We have adjusted to this inconvenience simply by not running two bath/showers simultaneously. I do not believe it to be a issue due to the water softener as it it pre plumbed with 1" connections and rated at 10gpm flow rate. I feel confident this change is solely due to the pex b smaller diameter creating flow restriction at each fitting. My install has 13 fittings so I believe at each one of those 13 fittings especially the 11 90° fittings has caused the flow restriction we are experiencing. Now if you only use one shower at a time I don't see this as an issue. If you use two and maybe a washer or dish washer then this could be a problem and I would highly recommend upsizing the pex B pipe and fittings to 1" to account for the flow restriction. An even better option in my opinion is 3/4" pex A. This is a better all around product and would not create the flow restriction to this degree. Pex A also has the ability to expand 3 times it's size so it's more freeze proof. By design it's constantly trying to get back to it's original size and constantly tightening the fitting (very few leaks). Pex A will run more in cost vs pex b but it's worth doing your research on. My issue with pressure/volume/flow rate was a mixture between not wanting to spend more on the install because that was an option and taking Smitty's advice saying the 3/4" pex b should be ok. I take it as a learning experience and hopefully my review can help someone in the future not deal with that aspect. The last thing to remember is a water softener is a ion exchange process. It removes calcium and magnesium ions and replaces it with salt (sodium) ions. After the softener you will have a slightly increased sodium level in your water. If your on a sodium restricted diet for example this is something to take into consideration and possibly look at a RO reverse osmosis under sink drinking water system. Or look into any RO system to further refine your drinking water to make it as healthy as you can regardless if your on well or city water. Overall we are happy with using Smitty's. Glad to have found them on Thumbtack. Thanks Jeremy & Pat for the install.

Had a water softener installed through Aardies. I am so glad that we had him install it. Gave me the information that I needed and wasn’t trying to up sell me on a “bigger/better” water softener. Messaged him on a Tuesday and it was installed on Saturday afternoon. Would highly recommend Aardies!
